she sits
in a glass jar
on a shelf
in the room
where he sleeps

he can’t see her
but he knows she’s there
watching over him
each night
as he leaves reality
and enters his dreams

he didn’t put her there
she climbed up
against his wishes
and slid silently
into the jar
when he wasn’t looking

she couldn’t help herself
she knew the risks
knew she could fall
at any moment
but it was worth it
just to be close to him

she knows
she will never find
the strength
to climb down
and let go of this man
whose heart she will never have

and so

she sits
in a glass jar
on a shelf
in the room
where he sleeps

and each night
she weeps
tears that he will never see
and slowly drowns
as the glass jar
fills with her sorrow

I felt your sorrow slip through me that day
Your solitary shadow crossed my soul
And though sweet sunshine rained upon my face
A salty tear slid I did not own
My life stood still and yet my clock still ticked
Destiny over time it seemed had won
I felt your final breath upon my lips
And in that moment knew that you were gone

Just Passing Through

a knowing smile; a sweeping glance
an invitation; a sensual dance
a long slow kiss; an intimate touch
a line blurred between love and lust
slips inside; rhythmic groove
slowly first; barely move
eyes closed; lips to taste
strong hands; slender waist
shadows cast; entwined shapes
backs arched, screams escape
but when pleasure dies pain is born
sinews stretched; muscles torn
scarlet ribbons lacing arms
ripped to shreds; nails in palms
broken bones; blinded eyes
strangled voices; guttural cries
bloodless hearts; tortured lovers
as one soul passes through another

a caress shared; between lips
electric shock; fingertips
desire inhaled; breathless whisper
heat sears; passion blisters; lust lingers; senses thrill

breath catches; ecstasy won; grasp slips; come undone

heaven scent
peaceful bodies
lovers spent

The Skater

I watch her most days, during winter.
She skates alone, her face always so serious,
concentrating hard, lest she make a mistake
that will send her sprawling, face down,
onto the cold hard ice below.

Her moves are always so intricate
as she weaves her way around the frozen pond,
her sharp blades carving their way
through perfect pristine ice, the occasional flash
of weak winter sunshine glinting off her blades,

a brief respite from the clouds that shadow her face.
Her turns and jumps astound me, yet,
every now and then she falters
and stumbles, but avoids the tumbles
by quickly correcting her balance.

She always seems to skate around the outside of the pond,
avoiding the lonely treacherous centre.
Perhaps she needs the space around the outside
to maintain her momentum?
Maybe she’s just avoiding the thin ice

at the very heart of the pond, knowing,
that it’s not strong enough to cope
with the weight that she carries around
on her fragile little shoulders?
But today I notice, she is skating

in ever decreasing circles,
faster and faster, closer and closer
to the danger zone. I want to cry out,
to tell her to be careful, to warn her
that the ice is thin and brittle

and will not hold her.
In the end there is no need.
As she comes out of a tight tricky turn
she loses her balance and falls clumsily to the floor.
I watch her as she struggles to her feet, breathless,

blood oozing from a wound on her knee
tears streaming down her face.
Dazed, she looks around her
and seems suddenly to realize
how perilously close she is

to the centre of the frozen pond.
She composes herself and head down
skates slowly back to safe familiar ground.
I’m glad she’s safe for now but I can’t help but wonder
………where she goes to in the summer?

The Door

The bedroom door has always creaked,
though more of a squeak in the early days.
Should have dealt with it then, a bit of tender

loving care, a spot of oil here and there
would have gone a long way. Not a problem
in the day, all the noise and bustle,

just at night, when the kids are asleep
and quietude creeps that it disturbs.
It’s the hinges you see,

been corroding for some time. Rust – just
sneaks up on you from behind, and suddenly
it’s everywhere.

Selachimorpha in a Suit

she feels him long before she sees him
lurking in the shadows, circling her
as she treads water in the dark ocean

surrounded by the pretty little fish
exchanging sweet angel kisses
feeding on plates of passing plankton

drawn by the scent of her fear
he looms into view, his powerful body
filling the space between her and escape

his quick black eyes miss nothing
his confident grin, shows the blood of his last victim
staining rows of needle sharp teeth,

she tries to dart past him, they dance
for a while, mirroring each other’s movements
he, merely toying with the delicate little fish

and then he strikes, quickly, dragging her down
flailing in his powerful jaws, to the ocean floor
where she lies, crushed and helpless

under his thrashing grey body
and she, powerless to resist, submits
to this shark, this man, this most powerful of predators

Lobolo Lament

A hand shaken
a vow taken
upon her.

A price paid
a debt laid
to rest

Human token
heart broken
a soul
is sold.

A veil lifted
defiance drifted

A promise kept
a tear swept
child bride.

I absent myself
from my daily life
on a regular basis.

Those closest to me
when I take my leave.

I’m still in the room
but it seems
even when I’m here

I’m not here
I’m elsewhere
so they tell me.

But if I’m not here
where am I?
Because I’ve looked

and I can’t find me……

she sleepwalks through her sorrow’s day
unable to face fully awake
inventing chores to fill the space

within her heart, and oft she prays
unwelcome thoughts are kept at bay
lest they flood in, sweep her away

to destination yet unknown
a one way ticket with no way home
the biggest fear to face: alone

but sometimes on the lonely drive
shadowy butterflies let loose inside
shredded wings that no longer fly

tear at secrets with every beat
ripping at muscle, heart beats retreat
raindrops sizzle on tarmac heat

violet cloudburst shall not sleep
turns to the forest green and deep
pulls over ‘neath the trees and weeps
