Worm

worm

It is only now,
as the particles come to rest;

the charred remnants
of a shared life

settling
in the tarnished urn,

that I realise –

I did not expect you
at the wake

but instead
watched you slither away,

eased your passage even

agile invertebrate
wriggling off the hook

of your own morality.
