Quarrymen

We wake, shale-eyed,
clutching at cold, sharp edges,
 

pebble-smooth warmth
eloping with sleep.
 

Dawn finds us on our knees,
scrabbling in the grit,
 

searching for crude tools
to chip away the grey.
