Communion

I had always thought you
a monochrome man,
black chest, stiff white collar

chafing a throat
scraped by morning ritual
and yet

when you mentioned
the stained glass window
at the back of the chapel

I did not turn to look in awe
with the rest of the
congregation –

I could already see the
sun-drenched colours
reflected in your eyes.
