The Boatman

Henry

For Henry

In the rise of the sun and the fall of the tide
As the little boat slowdrifts away from the quay
Hold steady the rudder as he pulls alongside

As our sorrow and solace begin to collide
Amid fragments of light his new course we now see
In the rise of the sun and the fall of the tide

Though our hearts are still heavy, our tears undried
We loosen the reef knots and accept what will be
Hold steady the rudder as he pulls alongside

On the warm breath of summer sweet melodies glide
Over waves in the cool shade of Van’s Redwood Tree
In the rise of the sun and the fall of the tide

Let our arms release him and our tongues be untied
To sing Hallelujah, set his happy soul free
Hold steady the rudder as he pulls alongside

New horizons to chart with fresh hope as his guide
On his last voyage out on this tranquil blue sea
In the rise of the sun and the fall of the tide
Hold steady the rudder as he pulls alongside

Kissing Zephyrus and The Art of Wearing Sandals

sandals

You teased me
as I tripped down the boardwalk,
through wind-blown dunes
in unsuitable shoes.

Words tumbled
across rough-hewn pine,
our newness palpable
in candlelit tales.

I felt the sand shift
as I wiggled my toes
– a habit from childhood
when laughter laced my days –

and again, later,
as you crossed the sky,
pulled a star from the roof of the world
and glistered my lips with a kiss.

Shiver-watching:

his body rises from the
slow water
++++++shaking,

sweeping sou’westerly
lifting salt beads
from his skin.

I lie
pale-golden
+++++++and glistening
+++++++++++++++waiting

for his feverish tongue
to slip
across cooldamp dunes.

Stem arced,
aching for the crest
+++++++++++I realise

it is not he
who has ascended
to burn above me

but I
who have tipped towards him

as naturally as the earth tilts,
+++++++++++++++++seeking
its sun.

free verse of the unfettered

Not all things can be contained:
casketed in rhyme, scanned into
a neat line, strait-jacket-strapped,
iambic packet-wrapped –

the way
summer butter
++++++++s l i d e s
into beachfire toasted muffins,

the hush of a shared
alpaca blanket as it
+++++++++++silks
against salt-naked skin,

or you, in the morning;
charcoal lashes
++++++++lifting
through a sweat-glistened fringe.

stirring
in denim sifted dunes,
dawn’s canvas light
baptising
cedar-scented skin,

fingers flex;
weaving last night’s
woodsmoke mementos
through the soft folds
of morning’s pink craving.

Freshwater West Path by Annabel Greenhalgh

warm freshwest breath
sweeps blue-grass dunes

saltwater licks
skin on skin skinny dips

unkinking brindled twists
and trying-to-forget-me-knots

twain
unravelling twine

Affinity

For M and for friendship

You broad-shoulder me to the beach,
pillow-creased and yawning,
our winter-beaten faces
upturned to the burn.

Lungs gather up the onshore Sou’westerly;
its briny tang caffling in our hair
as we skim ‘ducker’ stones
and watch the storm petrels scatter.

Noon finds us knee-deep
in the mud-silt sand,
elbow to elbow, giggling,
digging for clams.

Blistering afternoon slips slowly
down the cool throat of the sky
and as we trickle our way home
something resembling peace
hovers.
