Equus Ferus

Horse 1

He arrives mid-morning,
pawing the hot dust,
blunt thrust of snorting muscle
penetrating the corral.

His scent punches the air;
damp and pungent,
the rumbling aftershock
shoulder-charging my nostrils.

He parades, slowly,
rippled flanks
drip-feeding lusty morsels
as I resist the pull to approach.

The rope is coiled
and dry in my hands;
a flaccid snake that dare not
harness his sculpted throat.

I undress, wait,
quivering in the dirt,
while unshod hooves
imprint concentric whispers.

He comes to me, quietly,
in hard, shallow breaths,
allows me to grasp his withers,
clamber onto his unsaddled back.

I lower my quiet ache
to his dark neck,
animal heat flushing,
and it is in this brief fracture,

his body clasped to my breast,
his unspoken verse
pressed to my temples,
that we commune.

Counterpane

Sitting in this five hundred thread count womb,
inhaling the scent of lavender and chamomile
as it wafts along the cotton warp and weft,

I am soothed by the muted colours that are
only visible, when we allow ourselves
a moment to slip inside.

Trace

A tiny remnant of his sex, his scent;
an unwashed raiment is all that remains
to ease her gently into sleep’s descent.

The sweet aroma of the space they rent
this treasured piece of cloth all that retains;
a tiny remnant of his sex, his scent.

A deep breath in to bring bouquet’s ascent;
so bittersweet his perfume, when it deigns
to ease her gently into sleep’s descent.

Brief comfort stems nocturnal hushed lament
frayed fragment of their passion’s fluid stains;
a tiny remnant of his sex, his scent.

Elusive is the smell that represents
the torn and twisted sheets, lithe limbs in skeins
to ease her gently into sleep’s descent.

This nightly pheremonal supplement;
deep joyful fragrance full that floods her veins,
a tiny remnant of his sex, his scent

to ease her gently into sleep’s descent
